In 1978, a young man walked into my office in Nashville, TN and introduced himself as Richard Rowlett, President of Rowlett Advertising. I asked, "What do you do Mr. Rowlett?"(The last time I ever called him Mister.) He said, "I sell church pages in local newspapers around the country." "And, what will you do for me?", I asked. He handed me about a dozen proposal agreements. I looked at them and then said, "What do we do next?" He said, "Please sign 'em". I did, and I've never had cause to regret the decision. Since that time it has been a first-class, mutually beneficial relationship with Rowlett Advertising Service, "The Church Page People". I was sports editor of The Leaf-Chronicle in 1978 when Richard Rowlett started selling the church page for the paper and all I can remember is that it took up one of my sports pages. I spent 46 years in the newspaper business before I retired as President and Publisher of the paper in August of 2008. During that time I met and negotiated with lots and lots of folks who sold features and services to newspapers. Richard was one of the best of those guys. He was completely honest and worked well with our church community and advertisers. I never had a single complaint, except about his golf game. Not only did he help increase our profit, but Richard was also the eyes and ears of our advertising department and upon many occasions helped us find out what an advertiser was going to do or what our salesperson was not doing.
